“We Are Here to Stay” and Organize

In May 2013, a group of refugees who called themselves “Lampedusa in Hamburg” marched from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (main station) to the Rathaus (City Hall). They asked to meet with Hamburg’s SPD mayor Olaf Scholz. They wanted to know what the Hamburg Senate had planned to do with the Libyan refugees that had arrived from Italy and were now living on the streets. Hundreds marched together with them. They entered the Rathaus. The situation was very chaotic. Asuquo Udo, a group spokesperson, was stopped and questioned by a policeman in the City Hall: Udo: “We are the Lampedusa in Hamburg and we are here to demand our rights!”
